So today was our first softball practice. Yep, softball practice. My sister Dominique started a co-ed softball team, so Marshall and I joined, along with my youngest sister Damaris. We play every Sunday evening and the name of the team is Cleats and Cleavage. Catchy isn’t it? That’s about 75% of the reason I joined actually, just so I could get a jersey with that on it. Hahaha, jk jk. Or am I … ?
All kidding aside I was totally pumped about practice. We met at the batting cages, which I hadn’t been to in years, and took turns hitting the balls. A part of me was nervous, because I used to play softball all the time (yep I was in a ton of leagues and was totally the girl who would do the splits at home plate when I scored a point or when I caught a pop fly as catcher just like Geena Davis in A League of Their Own) but I haven’t swung a bat since I … um … got curves and filled out if you catch my drift. Turns out when I have the right bat, which 50% of the time I did, I can actually hit the ball. The other 50% with the wrong bat I looked like a total girl with no hand/eye coordination.
My old glove still works amazing but my throws from far away … well they um … let me just explain. You know how sometimes people need momentum to do something? Well I need that to throw far since it’s been so long. I have to do a little hop or skip and then a bounce to throw far. If you saw it you probably wouldn’t catch the ball because you would fall over in laughter. Maybe they’ll put me in outfield just for that reason. I can totally see one of the runners stopping mid run and dying of laughter (and also heat exhaustion) because of my throw from outfield in.
I also learned something new today. On practice days, or game days for that matter, I can’t have coffee. I guess when you get older your body changes and it can’t handle certain things before being outside practicing. It also sucks that I have hypohidrosis (the inability to sweat) so my face just gets super red and I ALWAYS have to stay hydrated. Trust me it sounds awesome, but it’s not. You need sweat to cool your body down, but if you don’t sweat your body doesn’t cool down like it should. It’s fatal if you’re not careful, but who wants to think negative right?!
Overall I’m excited to start our games. I think it’ll be fun to play with both my sisters, my brother-in-law and my amazing boyfriend. I’m pretty sure it’ll be even more entertaining for the family and friends who come to watch our games. This will DEFINITELY be interesting.
